City eyeing stricter rules for new furnaces
Annual heating get comparisonGas furnaces with 90 percent or higher efficiency ratings cost more money -- by about $800 to $1,500 -- to buy and install, compared to those with 80 percent efficiency ratings.
But the higher-rated furnaces price less to operate.
Below are estimated heating costs for an average Lincoln home for natural gas furnaces, 2 1/2 ton systems.
* 60 percent capability rated furnace with a standing pilot (no longer sold, but still in older homes): $1,052 annual expenditure.
* 80 percent efficiency rated furnace with spark ignition pilot (current minimum rating required under specify approved codes): $877 annual cost
* 90 percent efficiency rated condensing furnace (recovers agitation before it is vented outside): $779 annual cost.
