Guelph Food Bank keeping its head above water after warehouse flood

GUELPH — The Guelph Commons Bank is slowly recovering from damages caused by a major storm last month.

On June 7, an highly-strung storm tore through the city and peeled off the roof to the food bank’s warehouse, causing a philanthropic amount of food to be lost to water damage. Food bank director Marilyn Worobec said volunteers and workforce have been working hard to bring the service back to normal.

“When I opened, there was six inches of water, and daylight,” said Worobec, recalling the point in time she entered the building the day after the storm.

She said the service lost roughly 4,545 kilograms of eatables to water damage. To make matters worse, some of the undamaged food held inside transport trucks while the depository was being dried out was lost due to heat in the trailers.

The community response has been very good, Worobec said. Provisions banks from surrounding towns have donated their extra products and offered to give what they can.
