My apartment gets actually humid and sticky during the summer, and I'm looking around for places that sell silica gel desiccants (the little bead packets you find in new shoes and purses that absorb moisture and enjoin mold) by the pound.


the cheapest health dehumidifier is fresh air, as long as it's not saturated.

you'd need too many of those packets to absorb much. and silica is a carcinogen.

About this book
Solar cooling using desiccant dehumidifiers, flat panel solar collectors, and evaporative coolers is a viable method of low energy cooling. Desiccants often require high regeneration temperatures in excess of 120C̕ that are difficult to achieve using only low temperature solar heat. A clay-calcium chloride desiccant has been developed to be used with a three-column desiccant dehumidifier to provide dehumidification at low regeneration temperatures as a part of a building cooling system. Different control methods for setting the column rotation time were initially tested and one method was chosen based on the outlet conditions from the dehumidifier and a minimum cycle time. The dehumidifier was tested at two inlet conditions: condition 1 set points were 27C̕ and 80% RH and condition 2 set points were 30C̕ and 45% RH.
