Cooling cows does the trick
Conceive of a 1500-watt hair-dryer in your face - that's the level of discomfort dairy cows experience standing in holding yards on a hot day.
Rising quicken stress has a cascading effect on in-calf rates, a drop in feed intake and can be followed by losses in out production.
Cow comfort can mean the difference of at least five litres of milk production in hot weather.
Dairy Australia feedbase program superintendent Steve Little said cows looked for shade once temperatures hit 25C.
Dr Little said cooling efforts should be directed to the paddocks, laneways, dairy holding yard and upon pad.
"Use shade, sprinklers and fans to keep a cow's heat loading in balance," he said.
Dr Thimbleful has toured dairies in the US states of Georgia and Florida to study heat stress.
He suggested smaller milking categorize sizes and altered milking times in hot weather.
Many US dairies had troughs at the exit point.
"When essentials temperatures start to creep up, have drinking water immediately after a cow exits the dairy," Dr Thimbleful said.
