I am not a scientist but I weigh I do possess a modicum of common sense. It was an Internet humour piece on how our grandmothers did their laundry that got me intellectual.

The article told about building a fire to bring the water to a rolling boil before transferring it, pail by pail into a washing motor, into which lye soap and the white clothes were added. The clothes were agitated for a time until they were lifted out using a artificial rod, and put through a wringer. The wooden rod was necessary, because the water was too hot for bare hands.

In the interests of saving energy, many of today's new washing machines do not have a hot-splash wash cycle, and those that do, often bring down the temperature from 60C to 40C by adding cold water without you realizing it.

Boiling the best quality would kill germs, I thought.

Then came the front-loading washing machines and the common complaint of a ancient smell. To solve the problem, we can now buy tablets that will 'clean' our washing machines – until the next load runs through and leaves behind enough soak to grow mould.

I barely bought an LG front load washer/dryer to replace my existing top loaders. They are energy efficient and I heard that some can qualify for tax rebates, but how do I differentiate if mine will or not? Does anyone know the site that has specifics.

No, you bought it too antediluvian. There are state programs in development but they aren't in effect yet, and will not be retroactive

No. The only program for taxpayers on appliances is at the constitution level and it hasn't started yet.

I have front load washer/dryer. Towels smell even though they are dried promptly and they are dry out of dryer

I have tried everything I grasp of. No matter what I do, stand in front of the washer watching the timer, or drying for 1 1/2 hrs they still smell. Sometimes they smell fine, until you use them after the rain, and they stink as soon as they get wet.

My feeling is the towels have bacteria that is not getting killed in the washing machine or dryer. I recently had this problem (except front loading washer) and I be familiar with to leave the door to the washing machine open every time its empty. It
