Why do Western witches ride brooms? How did this idea originate?

Eastern or Oriental witches are not consideration or understood to transport themselves in such a manner although broom are common in the same areas.
How did it arise the witches ride brooms?

On Halloween you were to be operated on in a health centre and the surgeons wore Halloween masks instead of the traditional surgical masks. In addition, the nurses were dressed as witches and made their way into patients rooms riding brooms.
