LIVING WELL: Antibiotics not a cure all
November can be a transitional month and a bit uncomfortable while we try to casualness our bodies into the colder weather, refresh our driving skills for stormy conditions, and dig out our boots, gloves and outside gear to meet the elements. It’s also when we might start feeling the scratchy throat, or blocked ear, or the runny or stuffed nose. Oh, oh, we about, this may develop into an infection so we better get on antibiotics, right? Not so fast ... antibiotics won’t despatch a cold, the flu or other viral infection. So unless it’s a bacterial infection, antibiotics just won’t vocation.
The misuse of antibiotics has prompted the “Get Smart: Know When Antibiotics Work” toss one's hat in the ring, celebrated Nov. 14-20. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a great website (www.cdc.gov/getsmart/antibiotic-use/be informed-and-do) that outlines what works for what symptom, and as importantly, what doesn’t work! The bottom line is that antibiotics only prescription bacteria, not viruses. So, here are some quick facts:
