why do humidifiers need a filter?

I have to control mist humidifiers. why do they even need filters? is it to get minerals out of the water before it gets into the air? or to catch mold spores? or does it not even prerequisite them?

I deliberating I was following the directions and after I put the water in I screwed the filter in and let it sit for 15 minutes so the water has a chance to go through it. The bottom of the Humidifier has yellow makings.
