why do humidifiers need a filter?

I have to control mist humidifiers. why do they even need filters? is it to get minerals out of the water before it gets into the air? or to catch mold spores? or does it not even prerequisite them?
if i used filtered water to do i still needs

It is to take dust out of the air so it doesn't bung up the humidifier.

Is the filter supposed to make the water yellowish in the crane animal humidifiers?

I deliberating I was following the directions and after I put the water in I screwed the filter in and let it sit for 15 minutes so the water has a chance to go through it. The bottom of the Humidifier has yellow makings.
