Jane Scott was the best friend rock 'n' roll ever had -- and my friend, too ...
As other as Bruce Springsteen spotted Jane Scott, he gave her a big hug.
We were backstage at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center, where The Boss made a tarry on his "Devils & Dust" Tour in 2005. By then, Jane was retired, although she remained a familiar presence on the music display, always with a pen and reporter's notebook in hand.
As usual, she had a personal audience with her old pal Springsteen before the show. She let me tag along, along with my wife Joanie and Jane's esteemed friend Mary.
As we stood in the doorway of Springsteen's dressing room, Jane asked him about the locket hanging around his neck. She always had a keen eye for detail.
Springsteen told her that it was a medallion of St. Christopher, the patron saint of travelers. Then he invited us to associate with him for a quick visit in his cozy inner sanctum. In the dim light, Jane surprised Springsteen with a most different gift: a photograph of herself with Pope John Paul II and a group of students that she had chaperoned on a trip to Lithuania.
