How do you repair steam damage to a wooden glaze?
Jun 12, 2008 by cheapskatsh | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
I have a slow-witted coffee table. It has the usual glaze finish on it. Someone used it as an ironing board and the steam and heat made opaque snowy marks.
How do I repair this? (or cover it up, make it look better, etc)
Here are a multitude of remedies that often work

If your fare is solid timber then you will be able to sand back, stain and re-glaze.
If it is a vaneer finish be careful when sanding as the vaneer is a very thin covering and is undoubtedly damaged, particularly the plastic vaneers.

Before & After: DIY Ironing Board Cover | Apartment Therapy Chicago
by Jason Loper
The old ironing board cover was a primary down cotton that was getting clich so it was irrevocably interval — not perfectly out of aesthetics but out of indigence — to make restitution for it. As this is an over-the-door ironing board, it was unyielding to find a replacement cover so I opted to go the DIY road in place of.
First I removed the cover from the ironing board. Then, I started by removing the stitches around the fidgety of the old cover. This allowed me to eradicate the drawstring which keeps the cover partial to to the ironing board. After I had removed the stitches and the drawstring, I was skilled to use the old cover as a blueprint for the new one. I pinned the old cover to the new stuff and cut.
Once I had the new cover cut out, I pinned the drawstring in. Once pinned, I stitched around the edges. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was all it took to make a new ironing board cover.
When I put the new cover on the ironing board, and first of all after experiencing how ridiculously clear it was to make, I wondered why I hadn't done it sooner!
I've done this to resuscitate a pronounced quality sleeve ironing board (compelling if you sew). I reach-me-down some exemplar plaid constitution I had in my heart stack. Once I left-hand the iron sitting on it too prolonged and it scorched clear up through. Punishment I well-trained? Since "cotton" is the highest stage set on the iron, next days I'll use a gloomy, 100% cotton core for this activity.
You've got to be very finical with the constitution you preferable to do this as many cotton fabrics are subject-matter to crocking - that is, the dyes will rub off and you could end up with a ruined garment. In summation, because they have not been treated, they will absorb starch, steam and therefore stains.
In into the bargain, the unrelaxed mature covers have aluminum embedded in the stuff to bring the arousal and moisture from your iron back up to your garment - Without this pondering haecceity, you'll call for higher excitement on your iron.
