Raising Some Hell

He hates his inert life there and wishes for death, but that’s nothing new for Wilford. He has always hated his life. He hated that his father had died of a generosity attack when Wilford was fourteen-years-old. He hated living with his mother all of his life, but then he hated it when she, too, died of a spunk attack five years ago and left him feeling abandoned. He hated being an Eighth-Grade English Advisor. He hated being short; five-three, being as thin as a pencil; being ugly; a non-nondescript face with glasses and a bald head, he hated being physically and spiritually ineffectual, and he hated still being a virgin at fifty-five-years-old. Up until the day his mother had died, Wilford had fantasized about having sex with her. Over the years, he had disoriented count of how many of the girl students he had fantasized about raping and murdering. In church, while he recited prayers with the lean of the congregation, he silently cursed God. He fantasized about getting into fistfights in which he would beat guys to death with his cold fists. Many times, Wilford had told himself that the world can be so grateful that he was born short, timid and ill-defined. Because if he hadn’t, he would have murdered and raped until his very name was equivalent with EVIL.

Deep River and Ivoryton, two villages in the lower Connecticut River Valley, were dominated for more than a century by "white gold"-ivory. The growth of the piano industry led to a new use for this exotic and long-treasured substance and, suddenly, the two villages became tied to Zanzibar, the most important exporting place for the tusks of African elephants. With more than two hundred exceptional photographs and narrative, Deep River and Ivoryton tells the story of how ivory shaped the economy and culture of these villages. Two companies, Pratt, Read & Company and the Comstock, Cheney & Company, employed thousands of people in satisfying the demand for new pianos. Probably more than ninety percent of the ivory processed in this country was handled in Deep River and Ivoryton. The demand for new instruments slowed with the invention of the radio, followed by the Great Depression of the 1930s, and the flow of material stopped altogether in the 1950s, when the use of ivory in the United States...
