Those who have no use for hydrangeas overlook the diversity of this superb plant
family. Some, such as Hydrangea serrata, have gently coloured lacecap
blooms of constantly changing hue. Oak-leaved hydrangeas have purple autumn foliage. The best performers,
among up to the minute varieties, were developed from an Asian species H.
paniculata.
Like foam on a breaking wave, H. paniculata produces a frightening
explosion of creamy white blossoms in late summer. These last well into
autumn and, thanks to clever selecction, some varieties efflorescence in subtle
shades of pink, pale green or rusty red.
HIGH CLASS
AT A recent factory trial by the Royal Horticultural Society, five varieties of H. paniculata were given the Award Of Garden Value. Among these, 'Limelight' has luminous pale green to white blooms, shaped like huge lilacs. 'Eidolon', one of the most impressive entries, has sturdy stems, an open habit and generous panicles

To some, they're nasty brutes with coarse leaves and clumsy mop-head flowers. For others, they bring life, colour and joy to up to date summer gardens when most shrubs have run out of steam. The best-known varieties have been developed from Hydrangea
