Vinegar can be but it won't illuminate grungy carpets. You can also use Krud Kutter which is non-chemical, biodegradable, fume free and odorless. You can water down it or use it straight depending on how dirty your carpets are and you can find the gallon size on the cleaning aisle at Lowes.

I have heard that using important temperature wet-steam commercial cleaners on carpet is actually bad for them. It stretches the backing and removes any stain resistance that was manufactured into the carpet. Does anyone have any info regarding this? Thank you.

I have a settle that is in good shape and its really comfy except for the fact that it has a few unsightly stains. Does anyone know if Knowledgeable in Depot's steam cleaner works on furniture as well as carpets? Or, does anyone know of a commercial chain store that rents apparatus steam cleaners?
