why would the expansion tank on top of a water heater spring a tiny hole?

We drained the tank and found no corrosion in it, but the expansion tank crack looks corroded.
We drained the big tank, and found no corrosion. There was definitely corrosion in the expansion tank. Thanks!
My feel is that a small area in the tank was not treated with the corrosion resistant coating the rest was. Probably not worth worrying to fix, just replace.

The expansion tank does not have the shield against corrosion the other pars have.

It is caused by galvanic/concentration apartment corrosion, It could have been when the tank was made there was a small area with concentration of an alloy.

Bantam holes simply form with corrosion with time. Not always gross corrosion to be seen as some soft damp will slowly dissolve the metal away.

How much does installing an expansion tank for water heater cost?
May 22, 4976 by Jennifer B | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
We are replacing our old 50 gallon drinking-water heater. We were told that because of the new codes we will have to have an expansion tank installed at this time. We were quoted $300 for that. Does that seem reasonable or are we being overcharged?
Check tick off with your county or city water department and see if codes have really changed. Ask them about the drip 90. Seems unaccountable to me. Beware of repairmen when it comes to your home. Only deal with reliable companies. Good Luck!

How to drain the expansion tank, on an oil burner, when it has no drain valve?
Nov 17, 2010 by captainespinosa | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
I have an oil burner and the on relief valve is leaking. I went to check the PSI in the expansion tank but when I use the tire gage water came out the air valve. How would I swallow the tank? Or what else can I do?
There shoud be one, or at least a stopper.
If the plug is there, prepare for a mess and take out the plug, and have the parts ready to replace it with a proper drain valve with hose threads, so you can neatly draw off the unit.
