Peoria awaits decision on garbage carts
Even-tempered head-butting could occur Thursday between city administration and the City Council over whether now is the time to on with a mandatory Toter program for all Peoria Disposal Co. residential customers in Peoria.
The decision, according to See Manager Patrick Urich and Public Works Director David Barber, needs to be wrapped into a unalterable 2012 budget plan if a sweeping road reconstruction plan is to get under way.
Some council members, however, might need a pause on the mandatory Toter program. Many of them have been contacted in recent weeks by senior citizens responsible about having to maneuver and store the 96-gallon garbage carts.
A hike in the monthly garbage fee from $6 to $14 needs acceptance to get the program started.
The council meets at 6:15 p.m. to discuss the program, as well as to finalize the 2012 budget before it is voted on Tuesday.
"What I'm forceful to my constituents is that the budget is balanced whether we do the garbage fee or not," at-large City Councilman Ryan Spain said Wednesday. "It comes down to the conference's appetite for pursuing an increased garbage fee in exchange for road improvements. If the council moves well-advanced on this, we can work out the details (later) including Toters and Dumpsters for cleanups."
