Fire department puts heat on Occupy
Hours after a man hardly died of a heroin overdose, fire officials took action against Occupy Vancouver protesters, ordering them to eradicate unoccupied tents, tarp enclosures and clean up the site.
If they refuse, we will have to work with them and be involved, said fire chief John McKearney, adding officials would sack structures if the tent city didnt comply by 10 a.m. Friday.
When firefighters arrived to facilitate with the overdose just after 9 a.m., McKearney said wooden pallets under tents, garbage strewn about and overhanging tarps made it abstruse for the man to be transported to hospital.
By late afternoon, McKearney stood in City Hall and spelled out what could be the start of the end for Occupy Vancouver.
His stern warning to protesters was followed by a vow by Mayor Gregor Robertson to dip up bylaw enforcements around the tent city.
Two days earlier, Robertson whos fighting for his political mortal in the midst of a mayoral campaign spoke with a much softer tone. Since then, however, the Santa Claus parade has rerouted its annual path and fundraising campaign because of the protest and now, the annual Christmas Tree Lighting will be moving its event from the Vancouver Art Gallery, too.
