Seasonal weed pulling preserves rare plants on Mt. Tzouhalem

Rare species of plants on Mt. Tzouhalem are thriving, thanks to some dedicated people.

Every year, naturalists in the Cowichan Valley completely the mountain of noxious weeds called Scotch broom to make sure Garry Oak and wildflowers can survive. The Mt. Tzouhalem Ecological At one's fingertips is home to the rare plants found only in the Garry Oak ecosystems on south-east Vancouver Cay.

A restoration technician working at the site, Irvin Banman, said they're keeping on top of the invasive plants.

“Oh we’re perfectly winning the battle. The Cowichan Valley naturalists have been working at that for probably 20 years and then the Kind Conversancy of Canada came in. We’ve been on it for the last 10 years.”

He said there aren’t any perfected Scotch broom plants flowering on the mountain, because of the pulling they do each fall.

“What happens we have a lot of seed left over from when the broom second-hand to be there, and that seed is still in the ground—we call that a seed bank,” he explained. “And that seed bank keeps germinating year after year so you get new plants, new plants, year after year, we depart them all out… which is what we’re doing now. So they’re small plants.”
