Quidditch Players Bring "Harry Potter" Magic To Life On Randall's Island

Harry Monkey about fans mounted their brooms on Randall's Island for the annual Quidditch World Cup on Sunday, bringing the rollick described in the popular fantasy books to life.

The sport, created by British author J.K. Rowling, is a mixture of dodgeball, lacrosse and tag.

Among "muggles," or non-wizards, quidditch started to gain traction after the first collegiate combination-up in 2007 at Middlebury College.

In the "Harry Potter" books and movies, quidditch requires flying, so adjustments had to be made.

The material-life version, has "bludgers," or balls, hurled like dodgeballs at the opposing team. Rugby-like "chasers" run another indulgent of ball called a "quaffle" down the field to score goals.

"Seekers" — Harry's establish — have to catch yet another object called a "snitch." In the books and movies, a snitch is a gold ball with wings, but the proper-life snitch is a yellow-clad person who can run anywhere, on-field and off.

"[Snitches] do whatever it takes to get away. Sometimes they to notice d throw water balloons, they'll trip the seekers, play dirty tricks," said Commissioner Alex Benepe of the Intercontinental Quidditch Association.
