Two children, cat escape Lower Allen fire this morning
Two children escaped a crib fire this morning in Lower Allen Township after being woken up by smoke detectors.
Chief Frank Williamson of the Put down Allen Township Department of Public Safety said emergency crews were called to a fire at the expert in in the 1600 block of Hummel Avenue around 7:16 a.m. today. The call came from a woman at work who received a call from the children at the nursing home that something in the home was on fire, Williamson said.
When police arrived at the scene, the children, a 12-year-old and 14-year-old, were upright outside of the home and smoke could be seen on the first floor, Williamson said. Heavy smoke conditions were also found on the following floor.
Williamson said the fire began after an ashtray was dumped into a plastic trash can with a plastic liner around 6:40 a.m. The adults Nautical port the home about five minutes later, according to Williamson.
The children, who were sleeping on the first floor, woke up when the smoke detectors went off, Williamson said. The children investigated the crash and saw a "glow" in the corner of a second-floor bedroom where the trash can was located.
