Quaker Valley latest district planning auction to pound out cash
-->The well-thought-of news is that a Coca-Cola cooling machine that dates to at least the 1950s is on wheels.
The bad news is that the vehicle -- available for bid through an online auction of Quaker Valley School District's surplus, splintered and outdated equipment -- is trapped under a foot of concrete in a room below the district's business intercession.
"It's pretty nice," said Bryan Mikush of Mikush Maytag Home Appliance in Ambridge, a possible bidder on the large red machine that remains in fairly good condition. "I've seen them totally redone give away for $1,500."
Auctions have become a growing trend as school districts attempt to generate revenue to alleviate budget cuts.
In January, Moon Close School District netted about $65,000 in an online auction for items that would not be moving from the old high philosophy to the newly built high school.
Jim Heck, the director of operations for the district, said it was the department's first auction in at least 10 years.
