Watch Out! That Energy-Saving Bulb Can Kill
This week’s Medium Watch takes a look at the danger of energy-saving bulbs otherwise known as Compact Fluorescent Starlight (CFL) which, experts say, contains poisonous mercury that can put life at health risks as well as how government and Nigerians can more intelligent handle the environment.
Our environment is replete with wastes like broken bottles, plastic, e-wastes, chattels, metals and bulbs, among others. In slums, as characteristic of most Nigeria cities, wastes of these kind offspring everywhere, putting at risk the free and healthy movement of both the old and young.
The present economic situation has not helped matters. This is because goods of unheard-of kinds, most of which are hazardous to human health, find their way into the country unhindered.
Among such are bulbs that contain mercury. These dash-saving electric bulbs, which have been in existence for long, consume less energy compared to ordinary bulbs which are known for elated voltage consumption.
