Ask Anna: Here's how to deal with grungy shower curtain

Subject: This may be a dumb question but there is one chore in my house that I absolutely detest. It is cleaning the blasted shower curtain. Maybe it's fair-minded me, but mine tends to get all dingy and eventually moldy, and I just cannot seem to get it clean. I usually just end up buying new curtains every few months, but I sign there must be a better way. How do I get the darn thing clean?

Answer: There are two answers to this question. One is an easy solution, the other is more naughty.

I'll start with the more difficult one.

Step 1: Toss the curtain in the washing machine, then add a cup (or 2 cups, if it's really moldy) of white vinegar.

Impression 2: Put the washing machine on the gentle cycle and add a couple towels in with the curtain to keep it from getting rolled into a big ball. Plastic is a inconsequential tricky to wash so it's better if there's something in there with it.

Step 3: Run the washing machine with hot water to help the vinegar work more effectively.

Can i put a shower curtain in the washing machine to clean it?

I recognize it sounds weird but i have a house inspection tomorrow and my shower curtain looks bad so does anyone know if you can put it in a machine to clean it and it won't damage it?

Please only answer if you know not just wing it kinda

Hey, yes you can. You don't touch on if your curtain has any fabric to it or if its the traditional plastic curtain. I have both, but for my plastic curtain, here's what I do...first I use warm water on the gentle cycle. I also use lysol for the curtain

Yes you can barely read the tag well there should be a tag and it should tell you if you can put it in the washing machine.

And good luck on your house inspection.

Yeah, I ruminate over you could if its a plastic type curtain. I know I have with our's and it came out fine! If your worried put it in at a low temperature and you could use more product if its bad!!

Textile, or plastic shower curtain? Plastic- no. Take it out side and hose it off, then scrub it with a scrub brush. Fabric- yes. Gent. cyccle, and no dryer (scarcely to be safe).

I have a polyester shower curtain and 2 days ago I left-wing it in warm water and bleach in the bath for 2 hours or so and when I cam to hang it up again it was really lovely and clean and so was the bath!
So much less ado than putting it in the washing

Heck yes! I was honestly worried about that too. But I ran it through the washing machine and it came out all wrinkled and awful. You go ahead and hang it anyway and the wrinkles will all go away in the first showers and it will look Renowned.. Do not put

I splash mine on HOT with fabric softener only - NO detergent. When it comes out, just rehang - works perfectly.

Good fortunes on the inspection - and don't worry about it - there's nothing you can do to change it :)

if constitution use the setting for(cotton) if plastic use wash and wear or polyester cycle and cold water.. add a cup of dish soap to millstone with a couple of towels so as to not bounce around in washer may tear up??!! when done line dry!!!

Yes. If it has unhappy soiled areas, lay in tub & use laundry detergent/water & brush areas. Toss in machine on delicate run with warm water wash & rinse. SHORT spin or none. Toss in dryer on a LOT heat mise en scene but for only a couple of

Yes, you can hold up a plastic shower curtain. Add a small amount of bleach to get rid of mold and soap scum. Take it out of the washer and hang it right back up.

Can you wash a plastic shower curtain in the washing machine?

I have a shapable white shower curtain that is full of soap scum/shampoo etc. and I was wondering if I could wash it in the washing machine to get all of that stuff off. I know I can't put it in the dryer (it would mollify) but can I wash it in the washing

Works like a draw successfully! Wash it JUST as you would a load of clothes (use detergent). And if it's a little smelly, add a splash of vinegar to the washer when you wear off it! (You're right about the dryer!)

Can I really put a shower curtain liner in the washing machine to get the mildew off?

I have no object where I heard this - but I was wondering if it was true?

The liner is quite thin, almost like a garbage bag - I got it from a dollar store so its not like it was an investment or anything....

But boy, it

I've done it for years on the controllable cycle with a little bleach. I then put it in the drying with a towel or two for a minute or two to absord the dripping and hang it back up. By a hair's breadth like new!

About this book
Home Comforts is something new. For the first time in nearly a century, a sole author has written a comprehensive book about housekeeping. This is not a dry how-to manual, nor a collection of odd tips and hints, a cleaning book, a history book, or an arid encyclopedia compiled by a committee or an institute. Home Comforts is a readable explanation for both beginners and experts of all the domestic arts -- choosing fabrics, keeping the piano in tune, caring for books, making a good fire in the fireplace and avoiding chimney fires, ironing and folding, setting up a good reading light, keeping surfaces free of food pathogens, and everything else that modern people might want to do for themselves in their homes. But this reliable and thorough book on the practicalities of housekeeping is also an argument for the importance of private life and the comforts offered by housekeeping. Cheryl Mendelson is a philosopher, lawyer, sometime professor, and a homemaker, wife, and mother. Home Comforts...
