Cindy Lange-Kubick: Debating the dimming of the old school light bulb
Tuesday, lawmakers failed to spare the light bulb as we know it.
But don't lower your dimmer switches in sorrow yet. In the name of liberty, they vow to try again to repeal a stipulation for more energy-efficient lighting.
They're calling their effort the Better Use of our Light Bulbs Act, better known as B.U.L.B.
"We're not opposed to new technology," Rep. Joe Barton of Texas said during weigh on the floor. "We're saying, let people make their own choices."
The Republican was not talking about abortion, gun control or belief, but a far more pressing matter: Free choice in lighting.
"Why in the world does the federal government have to tell people what friendly of lights to use in their home?"
Amen, Brother.
And what's next -- how many miles a gallon our cars have to deliver? How much water my washing machine can use?
How many pollutants factories can spew from their chimneys?
Whoops.
Well, alrighty then, but enough is enough already, B.U.L.B. supporters must be saying.
