How do you plumb in a washing machine when the hot and cold pipes are not labelled (in the UK)?

I distinguish to to fit the washing machine, it's just that the two pipes that I need to fit the washing machine to have nothing to show whether they are the hot or cold pipes. Is there a rule that the one on the left is always the hot one etc?

I approve with most answers, but if the hoses on old machine are very old then use the new ones supplied. Nearly all machines are now cold fill only, so make sure hot valve is off an administer not leak. Good luck
