I'm replacing a thermostat on my water heater, and the replacement thermostat has 1, 2, 3 and 4 on it. The old thermostat had an additionally 2 and an extra 4 at the bottom of it that the new one doesn't have. I need to know if I can plug the wire that

I solely moved into this home and it is only about two years old but my electric hot water heater doesn't keep the water hot; its so hot you can't stand it but that only last a few seconds or so before it goes back to cold, do I need a new one?
