Turn off off gas to water heater. Disconnect and cap off gas line. Replace water heater with an electric one. Run electricity from service panel to water heater.
Check with local codes. Some cities lack a permit to install water heater

I have a guy that is irksome to charge me $800 at 80 bucks an hour. He states it took 10 hours to change water heater. With these problems.
