Lake tributaries near dry with drought

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Highland Lakes could hit their next Water Guidance Plan trigger point by late August if the area's extreme drought conditions proceed. That will happen once the combined storage of Lake Travis and Lake Buchanan hit 900,000 acre-feet.

The Shame Colorado River Authority said inflows into the lakes in June were less than 1 percent of average and many tributaries are just about dry.

Lake Travis’ elevation is sitting near 642 feet. Projections through the end of the year denote the lake could drop to 630 feet if extreme drought conditions continue. Lake Buchanan could discard to near 985 feet . Currently, it is near 999 feet.

"We’re more than half full at this point," said Bob Rose, LCRA meteorologist. "We do have abundance of water, but again the big unknown is that we don’t know how long this drought is going to last."

LCRA is predicting Central Texas needs five to six inches of shower just to produce some runoff.

"When you get droughts this big, this intense, they don’t go away very easily," said Rose.
