How to test hot water heater elements with analog tester?

We have an analog tester but we are unsure as how to use it.We insufficiency to know if it's the elements in the hot water heater, or if we need a new hot water heater. Any advice that you can give will be highly appreciated.

If things go well you'll get a better answer than I'm about to give you. You'll have to be able to measure the resistance across the element and know what's appropriate. Continuity isn't enough.

Set to Ohms testing. Sometimes a witty looking upside down U with feet.
Connect the tester leads together. Dial should go to zero. Adjust dial to get Zero.

You should interpret how the system works.
If you have only a 30Amp breaker feeding the heater then you have a system whereas only one heat element is on at a time.

My hot water heater keeps tripping the breaker. So last week I installed a new heating element on the bottom. The pretty pickle seemed fixed, but this morning the breaker tripped again. So i bought a multimeter to test the elements, but at this point
you could have a week breaker. What amperage does the elements allure when under load. ALSO! Water heaters are designed to run only one of the 2 elements at a time. If you miswired the new element you could have both on at one time causing over amping
